About Newcastle Castle

All of our income streams have dried up, at least until we can re-open safely. Please consider donating to help us. By donating you will help ensure the survival of Newcastle Castle and allow us to continue providing the excellent services we do to the public, core educational support to schools, the unique visitor experience and a rich cultural programme that constantly seeks to support new artists.

Newcastle Castle is operated by a registered charity. It is the place that gave the city its name and is a visitor attraction like no other, attracting local, regional, national and international audiences.

The Heart of the City Partnership that operate Newcastle Castle aims to advance the education and promotion of learning about the history and heritage of the area surrounding St Nicholas’ Cathedral, in particular Newcastle Castle. It also seeks to encourage the local community and visitors to the city to appreciate and enjoy the history and fabric of the buildings. The preservation of Newcastle Castle is another goal, the buildings being of historical interest and public importance.

During these exceptional times, the health and safety of our visitors and staff is our number one priority. We have therefore closed our doors temporarily until 1st June. This will be under review in May. Please check our website for updates.

Steeped in history this imposing Norman fortress, in the center of Newcastle Upon Tyne, is a rugged reminder of northern England's turbulent history. This was no baron's stately home. Newcastle Castle is a grim reminder of royal authority where armies gathered, and criminals were imprisoned and executed. It is where the story of Newcastle began, the reason the city got its name and has the most commanding views over the city and the River Tyne.

Usually open 7-days per week, our family-friendly historic attraction reveals the story of how Newcastle began, the reason the city got its name and to walk in the steps of the people who lived in the shadow of Newcastle Castle.

PLEASE NOTE: During these exceptional times, we are using our events ticketing system to accept donations. As such, you are buying a ticket to donate. You'll receive a ticket, the ticket is your proof of donation.

Donation Default is £5, though other options are available from the drop down menu. (eg. a £20 donation adds £15 to the £5 default. A £2 donation subtracts £3 from the £5 default).
