Witching Week (The Witch Film Screening, Talk and more )

Join us for a very special week of bewitching activities at Newcastle Castle.
The Castle Keep and Black Gate host a special film screening, talks, walks and crafts from Monday 27th May until Sunday 2nd June.

For HALF TERM WEEK....

The Harbottle Suite learning room in the Black Gate will have wickedly witchy free crafts for kids and families on throughout the half term – think bats, rats, spells and potions! Inject a little magic into your half term.

David Silk gives a talk on Wednesday 29th May. Weird and witchy folk tales from the North East. 6pm start for an amazing evening.

Jo Bath gives a talk on Thursday 30th May, 6pm – 7pm in the Black Gate as normal for talks.

“Dr Jo Bath will come to the suitably gothic surroundings of the Black Gate to talk about one of the darkest episodes in Newcastle’s history – the Witch Hunt of 1649, which saw 15 people hanged on the Town Moor for the crime of sorcery. Jo is the author of Dancing with the Devil and Other True Tales of Northern Witchcraft and is an authority on crime and punishment and witches in Early Modern England. If you want to delve deeper into this grisly side of Newcastle’s past, this is your chance!”

FOR THE WEEKEND....

Re-enactors from the English Civil War Society will bring to life Newcastle in 1649 at the height of the Witch Craze with authentic living history displays including soldiers and civilians of the 17th century. Come and chat to them and perhaps even come face to face with witches or worse…the fearsome Witchfinder himself, all taking place between 10am – 4pm on Saturday 1st June and Sunday 2nd June.
