Civil War - Siege and Storm

Designed for KS3 groups studying the Civil Wars, but great for any group looking at a decisive event in local history, this workshop is a hands on look at the Siege of Newcastle by the Scots in 1644 during the Civil Wars.

The workshop takes place in the Harbottle Suite in the Black Gate. This is an indoor classroom with two toilets (one accessible) and heating. It lasts approximately 90 minutes, though this can be varied if necessary to fit your needs.

Activities include:

  • A handling session of 17th century domestic items (real and replica) looking at day to day life in Newcastle in the Civil Wars

  • A handling session of 17th century armour and weapons (real and replica) looking at warfare in the 1600s

  • A film about the Siege of Newcastle specially commissioned in 2012 for the Siege and Storm exhibition

  • Roleplay activity - Pike Drill, showing how soldiers armed with pikes were trained and organised in battle

Optional activities include:

  • A debate activity looking at the political issues at play in Newcastle during the Civil War
