Suitable for KS 2, 3 or 4 pupils, this workshop introduces the theories and practice of medicine in the medieval period, from the four humours to leechings! It could be used as part of a KS2 post 1066 study, or for KS3 or 4 pupils studying aspects of the medieval period or medicine through time.

The workshop takes place in the Harbottle Suite in the Black Gate. This is an indoor classroom with two toilets (one accessible) and heating. It lasts approximately 90 minutes, though this can be varied if necessary to fit your needs.

Activities include:

  • A discussion and roleplay activity introducing the theory of the four humours

  • A group activity matching herbal ‘cures’ to various illnesses, based on real medieval cures and theories

  • A handling activity looking at the tools of a medieval barber surgeon

  • A brief introduction to the Black Death including some of the cures that doctors tried
