The Story of Newcastle

Old map of Newcastle

Perfect for Key Stage 2 pupils learning about the history of their local area, and the development of Newcastle from Roman fort to medieval town and industrial city. This workshop uses artefact handling and drama to look at the story of a city over 1900 years of history.

The workshop takes place in the Harbottle Suite in the Black Gate. This is an indoor classroom with two toilets (one accessible) and heating. It lasts approximately 90 minutes, though this can be varied if necessary to fit your needs.

Activities include:

  • A colourful visual presentation of the history of Newcastle from the Roman fort to the modern day

  • A drama session where pupils create a timeline of characters from Newcastle’s history, including important events like the Siege and the Great Fire.

  • A handling session with real and replica artefacts representing archaeological finds from throughout the city’s history, looking at what each can teach us about life in Newcastle through the ages.

  • A guessing game where pupils try to work out which world changing inventions were created in Newcastle!

Learning Outcomes: Local history, Significant historical events, people and places in their own locality; events beyond living memory that are significant nationally or globally; a study of an aspect or theme in British history that extends pupils’ chronological knowledge beyond 1066; a local history study, reflective learning, team working, effective participation, independent enquiry, communication, fun and enjoyment with others
