Tudor Newcastle
A great workshop for Key Stage 2 pupils (or Key Stage 3) learning about the Tudors. Although led by the Castle’s learning team we usually deliver this workshop on the Quayside at one of Newcastle’s only surviving 16th century houses, Bessie Surtees House. We can combine it with a session on Tudor Crime and Punishment in the Castle for a full day visit. By exploring Bessie Surtees House pupils will learn about the life of Tudor merchants in a major trading port.
The workshop takes place in Bessie Surtees House. There are two toilets available in Bessie Surtees House. Bessie Surtees House has a relatively small number of steep stairs and uneven floors throughout. The workshop lasts for approximately 90 minutes.
Activities Include:
A handling activity with various replica objects from a Tudor house.
A tour of Bessie Surtees House looking at the unique features of a wealthy merchant house.
An examination of a Tudor era map of Newcastle (the earliest map of the town!) identifying the landmarks.
See the Medieval Crime and Punishment activity for the other half of the session, we change the details to align more with Tudor Crime and Punishment!
